Practical city guide

History and character

Understand the setting before choosing your own route.

Erfurt grew where important trade routes crossed. Its former prosperity is still visible in churches, merchants' houses and the Krämerbrücke, lined with homes and workshops.

The city combines centuries of history with the everyday rhythm of a regional capital. Domplatz, Fischmarkt and the Gera riverbanks lead from monumental landmarks to small galleries, cafés and green corners.
